PH EMBASSY IN PHNOM PENH HOLDS
FIRST KAPIHAN SA PASUGUAN FOR 2019
In the first edition of its Kapihan sa Pasuguan for 2019, the Philippine Embassy in Phnom Penh organized a Post-Arrival Orientation Seminar (PAOS) on 24 February 2019, with more than sixty (60) participants from the Filipino community in Cambodia.
“As in previous editions of the Kapihan sa Pasuguan, we constantly endeavor to share with our kababayans vital information and know-how in adapting to their new environment, and at the same time ensuring that they properly observe local laws, customs and practices” said Philippine Ambassador to Cambodia Christopher B. Montero noted in his welcome remarks.
Conducted in a town hall format, an official from Cambodia’s General Department of Immigration, Major Sim Khay, briefed participants on the immigration policies and procedures of Cambodia, particularly on matters pertaining to types of visas and extension of visas, as well as available remedies for overstaying foreigners. Dressed in a barong, Major Sim mentioned that he has many Filipino friends and had been to the Philippines several times. He welcomed Filipinos to work and stay in Cambodia, but called on them to ensure that their visas remain valid at all times to avoid any problems in the future.
Attendees were likewise briefed on security and safety protocols by Col. Josel ZuĊiga of the Office of the Defense and Armed Forces Attaché, followed by a presentation by the legalization services of the Embassy by Consul General Myca M. Fischer, particularly on the acknowledgment of employment contracts to ensure that basic provisions on the protection of Filipino workers are observed by employers.
A panel discussion ensued with the participation of Mr. Francisco Serevo, Ms. Adel Leilani Legarta, and Mr. Francis Perol, all long-time Filipino residents in Cambodia representing the garments, business and education sectors, respectively. They shared basic adaptation tips on adjusting to the Cambodian way of life, as well as practical advice on daily living and ways of saving and investing in their future.
As a way to relax on a Sunday afternoon and further cultivate the sense of community among the attendees, the PAOS was immediately followed by the screening of the romantic comedy “English Only, Please” which stars Jennelyn Mercado and Derek Ramsay. The film was shown free of charge, with the support of the Film Development Council of the Philippines. END
