Former Filipinos may re-acquire their Philippine citizenship through Republic Act (RA) No. 9225 or the Citizenship Retention and Re-acquisition Act. This law, which took effect on 17 September 2003, declares that former natural-born Filipino citizens who acquired foreign citizenship through naturalization are deemed not to have lost their Philippine citizenship under conditions provided in the Act. A former Filipino can re-acquire Philippine citizenship by taking the oath of allegiance to the Republic of the Philippines.

A.

RE-ACQUISITION OF CITIZENSHIP

 

REQUIREMENTS

   

  Duly accomplished application form

  Birth certificate issued by the NSO and duly authenticated by DFA.  In case the birth certificate is not available, other documentary proof as listed below.

  Certificate of Naturalization or equivalent document authenticated or attested to by relevant authorities.

  Three (3) 2 X 2 photos (white background) with the following view: left side view, front view and right side view

  One (1) Passport size photo (white background) to be affixed to the Certificate of Identity

  Fees – USD 50

  Processing Time – Three (3) working days

 

DOCUMENTS THAT CAN BE CONSIDERED IN LIEU OF BIRTH CERTIFICATE
(AT LEAST TWO DOCUMENTS, IN ORIGINAL, MUST BE SUBMITTED)

   

  Baptismal Certificate

  Birth Certificates of Children

  Marriage Contract

  Land Titles

  Proof of Service to Philippine Government

  NBI Clearance

  Other official and genuine documents which could prove natural-born citizenship

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS – If married

   

  Marriage Certificate authenticated by relevant authorities

  Fees – USD 25 (if the document requires authentication by the Consular Section of the Embassy)

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS – If widowed

   

  Death Certificate of Spouse authenticated by relevant authorities

  Fees – USD 25 (if the document requires authentication by the Consular Section of the Embassy)

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS – If marriage is annulled

   

  Court decision on Annulment authenticated by relevant authorities and, if necessary, also authenticated by the Consular Section of the Embassy

  Annotated Marriage Certificate authenticated by relevant authorities

  Fees – USD 25 for each document above (if said documents require authentication by the Consul Section of the Embassy)

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS – If divorced

   

  Divorce Decree certified by the proper courts and authenticated by relevant authorities

  Fees – USD 25 (if the document requires authentication by the Consular Section of the Embassy)

B.

RENUNCIATION OF CITIZENSHIP

 

REQUIREMENTS

   

  Personal appearance

  Duly accomplished application form

  Original and one (1) photocopy of the relevant notice or certificate of approval of citizenship application from the appropriate Cambodian authority and attested by the MFAIC

  Two (2) signed original Oath of Renunciation

  Two (2) identical passport size photographs (4.5 cm x 3.5 cm) in color, recently taken, showing clear front view of the applicant’s face

  Applicant’s current Philippine passport with two (2) photocopies of the identification page

  Fees – USD 50

  Processing Time – Three (3) working days
