EMBASSY REACHES OUT TO FILIPINOS IN SOUTHWEST CAMBODIA

A team from the Philippine Embassy in Phnom Penh travelled more than five hours to undertake a Consular Outreach Mission to Sihanoukville on 25-26 August 2018. A coastal province 221 kilometers from the capital, Sihanoukville hosts about 300 Filipinos.

The Embassy team provided vital frontline consular services to the Filipinos working and living in Sihanoukville. In particular, the Embassy offered passport services, Embassy registration, as well as notarial services and overseas voters’ registration.

Members of the Filipino community in Sihanoukville expressed appreciation for the Embassy's efforts to bring Philippine government services closer to where they are as this minimized the need for them to be absent from work. For many of them, it was their first time to interface with the Embassy. “Hindi madaling makapag-apply ng leave sa trabaho, lalo na at bago pa lang kami dito.  Kaya, malaking tulong talaga na pinuntahan kaming mga tiga-Sihanoukville ng Embahada.”  Another Filipino was happy to be able to register as an overseas voter, “Importante para sa akin ang maka-boto kahit nasa ibang bansa na ako. As a citizen, I want my voice to be counted.”

With the rapid economic development in the area, there has been an increasing number of OFWs in Sihanoukville, most of whom work in the construction and tourism industries.
