The Philippine Embassy in Cambodia showcased Filipino street food at the ASEAN Cuisine Festival 2017 held on 01 to 02 April 2017 at the Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh.
 
The Philippine country booth mounted by the Embassy featured a wide variety of Filipino street food and delicacies such as kwek-kwek, calamares, suman malagkit, espasol, pastillas, puto, puto cake, puto leche, leche flan, sapin-sapin, pastillas and spaghetti, as well as summer favorites like ice candy and samalami, prepared by Filipino caterers in Phnom Penh. Filipino products from Cambodia-based Philippine companies such as Filmart, Liwayway (Rinbee/Oishi) snack foods, and Unilab Pharma (PH Care, Decolgen, and Alaxan) were also introduced to the festival guests.
 
At the Opening Ceremony, Filipino artists/performers – Ms. Myra Bangad, Ms. Shaleemar B. Collado, and Mr. Omar Jose S. Solis – serenaded the crowd with several Pinoy folk songs using banduria and guitar accompaniment. A group of Cambodian students from the Royal University of Phnom Penh amazed the crowd with their colorful costumes and graceful performance of  Philippine folk dance “Lulay,” as taught by Ms. Myra Bangad, a Phnom Penh-based Filipino music teacher.
 
The Festival is charity event organized by Pour Sourire d’Enfant (PSE), a French non-government organization, in cooperation with Cambodia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MFAIC), Ministry of Tourism (MoT), and the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (MoEYS). The two-night fundraising  event featured over 70 kinds of ASEAN food and dishes from different countries and various  cultural performances.  An estimated 12,000 people attended the event.
 
"As Chair of ASEAN this year on its 50th year, the Philippines is pleased to join this noteworthy undertaking. Not only does it promote greater awareness of ASEAN cuisine among Cambodians, it is likewise a concrete manifestation of ASEAN's caring and sharing community spirit," said Philippine Ambassador to Cambodia, Christopher B. Montero.
 
The proceeds of the Festival will support PSE’s vocational training program on ASEAN Tourism.  END
