In line with the commemoration of ASEAN's 50th Anniversary, the Philippine Embassy in Cambodia joined other ASEAN Embassies, and the Embassies of China, Republic of Korea, and Japan in the ASEAN Plus Three Festival 2017 held at the Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP) on 11 March 2017.
The Festival showcased the thirteen (13) countries' rich heritage through cultural performances, traditional games, language, documentaries, tourism destinations, and products.
A Philippine country exhibition booth showcased the country's tourism destinations, handicrafts, and Philippine products available in Cambodia, such as Liwayway (Rinbee) snack foods and Unilab Pharma’s PH Care, Decolgen, and Alaxan. The Embassy likewise engaged festival goers in a yo-yo exhibition and trivia quiz on the Philippines.
Several Filipino restaurants and caterers joined the event showcasing Filipinos dishes and delicacies such as palabok, tupig, ube halaya, ice candy, and chicharon.
The Embassy demonstrated the yo-yo and patintero in the traditional games area of the Festival, and presented videos on the "Roots of the Filipino Race" and DOT's new promotional video on “Why It’s More Fun in the Philippines.” A Filipino language training session on the Alpabetong Filipino was also conducted by Ms. Lorna Ta-a.
The showcase of the event was a cultural performance rendered by five (5) RUPP students on the Philippine folk dance “Lulay,” as taught by Ms. Myra Bangad, a Phnom Penh-based Filipino music teacher.
"The Philippine Embassy is pleased to join this event as an opportunity to showcase the Philippines' unique cultural heritage and traditions. This year, as the Philippines chairs ASEAN during its 50th year, We expect other schools and universities in Cambodia to follow the example of RUPP in organizing similar activities that promote cultural exchanges and mutual understanding among Cambodia and its neighbors in ASEAN," said Philippine Ambassador to Cambodia Christopher B. Montero. END
