The Sentro Rizal of Phnom Penh (SRPP), in cooperation with the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), organized the public screening of the movie “Thy Womb” on 11 September 2015.
Over forty (40) people braved the monsoon rains that flooded some of the streets of Phnom Penh to watch the critically-acclaimed movie about a Badjau mid-wife in Tawi-Tawi coping with her own infertility. Starring Nora Aunor and directed by Brilliante Mendoza, the movie was an eye opener to many of those present who are not familiar with the beliefs and traditions of their fellow Filipinos living in Tawi-Tawi.
“We chose this movie, not only to show the diverse cultures of the Philippines, but, more importantly, to increase the consciousness of viewers in recognizing the dignity of women and the role and contribution of women in the family and community,” said Philippine Ambassador to Cambodia Christopher B. Montero.
The film showing is among the activities on Gender and Development (GAD) organized by the Embassy to implement Section 26 (Right to Information) of Republic Act 9710 otherwise known as the Magna Carta for Women.
