Philippine Embassy in Cambodia Launches the Fourth Batch of the Basic Khmer Language Course for Filipinos in Cambodia
Phnom Penh, 24 May 2022 – On 16 May 2022, the Philippine Embassy in Cambodia conducted its fourth batch of the Basic Khmer Language Course for Filipinos in Cambodia via Zoom. The first session was attended by 68 Filipinos, majority of whom are residing in Phnom Penh.
Through the online conduct of the classes, Filipinos located in other provinces of Cambodia such as Sihanoukville, Poipet, Siem Reap, Kandal, and Kampong Cham, are able to join the course.
Funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs – Office of the Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs (DFA-OUMWA), the 20-hour course is intended to equip Filipinos in Cambodia with basic knowledge of Khmer expressions and greetings that will aid them in adjusting to the new environment, including their workplace.
In her welcome remarks, Vice Consul Frances Cleofas encouraged participants to participate and complete all sessions as learning the language will be a great advantage in connecting and engaging with Cambodians as well as give them a better understanding and appreciation of the rich culture of the Kingdom of Cambodia.
The first batches of basic and intermediate Khmer courses were conducted in 2019 by the Embassy with 147 Filipinos in Cambodia having successfully completed the courses.
The course is conducted by Mr. Hok Dara, a Khmer language teacher for foreigners and author of the book “Cambodian Vocabulary for Foreigners.” Offered to Filipinos residing and working in Cambodia. END
