PH Embassy Launches the 3rd Batch of Intermediate Khmer Language
Classes for Filipinos in Cambodia
PHNOM PENH, 13 October 2021 – The Embassy of the Republic of the Philippines in Phnom Penh launched its third batch of the Intermediate Khmer Language Classes for Filipinos in Cambodia on 12 October 2021, which was conducted online via Zoom. Thirty-seven (37) Filipinos based in Phnom Penh and various provinces in Cambodia actively participated in the first session.
In her welcome remarks, Consul General Emma Sarne mentioned that language skills are important drivers of migrant economic and social integration. She mentioned that learning Khmer will increase the overseas Filipinos’ employability and open opportunities to higher paying jobs. In addition to the benefits of actively interacting with the locals and getting insights into the history and culture of Cambodia, she also stated that learning the local language builds trust that opens social and economic doors for the successful participants.
The 20-hour training will cover complex conversations on work, daily routine/activities, renting a house, and going to the pharmacy, among others.
The course will run for two hours every Tuesday and Thursday evenings until mid-November 2021 and will be conducted by Mr. Hok Dara, a Khmer language teacher for foreigners and author of the book “Cambodian Vocabulary for Foreigners.” Participants will be given certificates after completing the course.
