41 Filipinos in Cambodia Successfully Complete the
3rd Batch of Basic Khmer Language Class for Filipinos in Cambodia
Phnom Penh, 11 May 2021 – Forty-one (41) Filipinos from Phnom Penh and different provinces in Cambodia successfully completed the third batch of the Basic Khmer Language Class for Filipinos in Cambodia which was conducted virtually via Zoom from 30 March 2021 to 11 May 2021. Participants who attended the class and passed the exam will be awarded certificates.
Funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs - Office of the Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs (DFA-OUMWA), the 20-hour class was intended to equip Filipinos in Cambodia, especially the newly-arrived, with basic Khmer language conversational skills.
In her remarks at the end of the class, Vice Consul Frances Louissa Cleofas noted the good turnout and congratulated the participants. She said that learning the language will give them an opportunity to closely engage with the Cambodian people, facilitate assimilation to their new environment, and understand the Cambodian peoples’ perspective on things.
The participants expressed appreciation to the Embassy for organizing the class that benefited many Filipinos throughout Cambodia.
The first batch of the Basic Khmer Language Class was physically conducted in March-June 2019 with 18 Filipinos in Phnom Penh completing the course. The second batch was held mostly through Zoom in March-July 2020 with 18 Filipinos completing the class.
The course was conducted by Mr. Hok Dara, a Khmer language teacher for foreigners and author of the book “Cambodian Vocabulary for Foreigners.” Offered to Filipinos residing and working in Cambodia, the language class was conducted for two hours every Tuesday and Thursday. END
